Matters Needing Attention in The Grinding Of Titanium Alloy Rods And TC4 Titanium Alloys

Due to the tendency of titanium alloy material to fill the grinding wheel, it brings difficulties to the grinding of titanium alloy rod and TC4 titanium alloy. Higher residual stress, at the same time, the surface finish is not ideal.

These difficulties can be basically solved by:

(1) Select a suitable grinding wheel, such as a silicon carbide grinding wheel, with medium grain size (60~80), medium hardness (J~M), surface speed of 700~1200m/min, alumina (aluminum oxide powder or corundum) The grinding wheel should be used at a lower speed, such as 550~600min. A medium particle size is also required.

(2) Use a lower grinding wheel speed and feed speed; due to the low grinding wheel speed, less sparks are generated.

(3) Titanium sparks may catch fire when encountering oil mist, but fully immersing the workpiece with oil can reduce this danger. The rust-proof ammonium nitrite solution can completely eliminate the risk of fire.

(4) Cooling with buffer or cutting fluid coolant, and using vitrified bond and chlorinated or vulcanized cutting oil, can achieve good results. No matter what type of coolant is used, good filtration is required to eliminate the "fishtail" stain caused by the recirculation of the titanium particles.
